Adaptive Reuse of 1930’s icehouse into a state-of-the-art headquarters for cutting edge marketing agency

Marketing agency moves it Headquarters from San Francisco to Oakland’s Jack London Square

H&L Partners moved out of the 20th floor of a high rise in San Francisco’s financial district and into Oakland’s Jack London Square when they purchased a 3 story former ice house. H&L Partner’s COO, Andrea Alfano, explained the move by saying: “We believe in the rebirth of Oakland, and we want to be part of that. We will have a wonderful open space, a great creativity and collaboration space, and because it’s an open area near the water, that gives us more opportunities for creativity.”

To provide the creative, open, collaboration space H&L required, KTA designed a new internal staircase to link the first and second floors, used activity-based design strategies and selected partitions and acoustical treatment that doubled as marker boards and tack boards. KTA also designed a new deck and trellis to provide outdoor work and play space with views of the water.

Seismic and ADA upgrades were also completed along with structural reinforcement and the addition of electrical, data, and energy efficient mechanical ventilation systems.
