The Kahn family wished to add a second story to their
Mediterranean-style home. More space was needed, and the addition offered an
opportunity to take maximum advantage of the stunning San Francisco Bay
KTA designed a 1,200-square-foot addition to include a
master suite with an outdoor trellised deck and a child's bedroom/playroom.
The Main Level was remodeled to include an artist's studio, laundry and
saltwater fish tank display. The addition's front façade was inspired by
homes from the same period. A wrought iron balcony feature was intelligently
designed to present a refined image from the street view.
A new deck off the master suite offers stunning views of San Francisco
Bay from the ridge-top property. A pergola shades the deck by day. The Owners
have sprinkled the pergola with tiny lights for a lovely nighttime effect.
The existing courtyard with its inviting landscaping, outdoor fireplace
and Mediterranean tile work was incorporated into the design. KTA improved
the connection between the home's interiors and exterior by raising the
courtyard to floor level, adding doors to the courtyard and relocating porch
KTA maintained the home's Mediterranean style and original character.
New hand cut, rough-hewn beams were used for ceilings and eaves. New windows,
specially designed by KTA, match the contours of existing rounded-top windows.
Original roof tiles were carefully removed and re-used on the roof of the new
addition. Details like window trim, decorative vents, roof eaves and overhang
match or complement the same elements in the original structure.
KTA assisted the homeowner by helping her define specific needs and
preferences as well as a project budget. Project architects created a master
plan that outlined each phase of the work. The homeowner felt that KTA's
combination of residential and commercial design experience helped provide a
depth of experience and to streamline the project.
